Allergies are the most common and probably the most complex cause for red eye symptoms. In general, allergies are poorly understood, for example we can not fully explain or cure many allergy induced disorders such as asthma, rosacea or chronic urticaria.

We can be allergic to almost anything, some researchers now believe that Rosacea is caused by an allergy to microscopic mite (Demodex folliculorum) that lives in the hair follicle. Knowing that eyes also provide a broad surface area for the collection of any airborne allergens it would not be surprising that some hidden allergy may be responsible for the adverse reaction, as people may experience allergic reactions limited solely to ocular tissues.

Perennial allergic conjunctivitis may last throughout the year and although itching is the key symptom for diagnosing ocular allergy disorders it is often absent in allergic conjunctivitis. Some types of allergies, for example hay fever, make the eyes itchy, while others may merely produce a chronic redness. It’s not only invisible microscopic particles that are all around us and abnormal immune system that may cause red eye symptoms, hidden food allergies may also create an allergic reaction of the eyes with usual symptoms such as itchy or red eyes.

The first line treatment is identifying allergens and avoiding them. The most popular medicines used in ocular allergy treatment are artificial tear drops (such as systane, theratears or refresh endura) and Patanol which is a combination of anti histamine and mast cell stabiliser. People who do not respond well to first line treatment may be prescribed with Alrex, which is a corticosteroid approved by FDA for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.

Long term use of corticosteroids have serious side effects such as elevated eye pressure or a possible development of cataract, therefore some specialists use Restasis (cyclosporin) for long term anti inflammatory effect, especially when dry eye symptoms are observed. A new possible trend in allergic eye inflammation treatment may be anti – immunoglobulin E medicine (such as Xolair), which is currently only approved for asthma.

An estimated 20% of the world’s population suffers from allergic disease and may present as red itchy eyes, rhinitis (runny nose), asthma, and allergic conjunctivitis.

Ocular allergies are specific immunologic changes that result in inflammation on the conjunctival surface. This is a response to an increased level of Mast cells in the surface tissue and will result in a mild allergic reaction. When immunoglobulin E is introduced and interacts with a mixture of mast cells, lymphocytes and eosinophils, the allergic response is more severe and corneal involvement is much more likely.

There are several types of allergic reactions that affect the eyes. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is one of the most common types and is a typical reaction to Ragweed pollen and other environmental allergens. Perennial allergic conjunctivitis is a variant of the seasonal type, but reoccurs yearly in response to exposure to a certain allergen. Vernal conjunctivitis is uncommon and is a chronic type of the seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. This type more often occurs in children. Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis is most often associated with contact lens wear and is a reaction to exposure to surface debris. It results in follicles and papilla (bumps) on the inside surface of the lids. Finally, contact dermatitis is an acute response to exposure to an allergen. It results from touching an allergen and then rubbing the face or eye lids. This causes exposure and red, itchy, scaly skin is the result. There may be ocular involvement if the eye is exposed as well as the skin.

Treatment options vary depending on which allergy the patient suffers from. Surface allergies like contact dermatitis are best treated initially by cool compresses. Oral antihistamines interfere with systemic involvement, but are not the best choice for the surface disease of the eyes. Vasoconstrictors are available over the counter, but don’t work that well for moderate to severe reactions.

Mast cell stabilizers have been around for some time and are effective in reducing some of the symptoms, but still leave the patient uncomfortable. The newest treatment modality is the combination multi-action surface medicine like Patanol and Pataday. This medication is comprised of mast cell stabilizers and antihistamines. They attack the entire source of the disease process. Relief is quick and with Pataday which is a single does per 24 hours, long lasting and easy to use. The only stronger topical medication is steroids. They will resolve the symptoms and red eyes and are used in severe allergic reactions. The only problem is that they can NOT be used for prolonged treatment due to the severe side affects. When a bad allergy is encountered, steroids can be employed to start the treatment and then change to medications like Patanol/Pataday for long term therapy.

In short, ocular allergies are very common and cause substantial discomfort in affected individuals. New treatments and medications eliminate these symptoms and permit the individual to live a normal life during previously difficult times.

Do you suffer from sore irritable eyes? Are your eyes often red and swollen and do you suffer from dark rings and puffiness around your eyes? Well there are quite a number of ways you can treat sore eyes without having to resort to expensive creams and lotions.

Very few people realize that there are a number of specific exercises and regular steps you can take to keep your eyes healthy and working properly. If you start a regular regime of self-administered eye related treatments you can reduce soreness and swelling quite quickly and maintain the proper function of your eyes. Although there are many such treatments we have dealt with some of the more simple and inexpensive eye care tips that are available to you.

Easy And Inexpensive Eye Care Tips

One of the best ways for you to keep eyes functioning properly is to ensure that you have a diet that is rich in beta-carotene. Many fruits and vegetables are beta-carotene rich including carrots, spinach, papaya and mangoes.

Another important recommendation to assist in eliminating sore and red eyes is to keep your eyes protected against the harsh rays of the sun. Whenever you are out in the sun for extended periods of time you should, wherever possible, always wear UV protection enhanced sunglasses. If you are lying on the beach for example you should also cover your eyes with a towel or hat so as to avoid the sun’s piercing rays.

When you are at home and about to retire to bed for the night it is a good idea to place small slices of cucumber on your eyes. This helps to reduce puffiness and bags from under the eyes and also relieves soreness. During the day you will find that by gently applying the juice from crushed cucumber around the eyes any irritation or dryness will be reduced.

You could also start a daily routine of very simple exercises to help improve your eyes and the appearance of the surrounding skin. One excellent exercise involves sitting down and rubbing your hands together. The friction from the rubbing will heat your palms. Once your palms are warm place one palm over each eye and let the warmth flow into the skin surrounding your eyes. Ensure that your eyes are fully covered and that no light gets into your eyes. While you are doing this take slow, even deep breaths and relax yourself. Repeat this process for around 15 minutes each day and after a week or so you will notice the improvement in the inflammation around the eyes.

So by eating the right beta-carotene rich foods, using natural products on your eyes and surrounding skin as well as some simple daily exercises your eyes will show marked signs of improvements within a relatively short period. Remember that your eyes are very important to your overall health so if you notice any unusual symptoms like a discharge from the eye or repeated redness and soreness please consult with your doctor as you may be suffering from a more serious problem.

Allergies can be triggered by many substances.
Seasonal allergies (also called hayfever) are often caused by the grass,
tree, and weed pollens that are abundant in spring and late summer.
Other types of allergies can affect your eyes year-round. Allergy symptoms include
sneezing, congestion, and red, watery, itchy eyes.

Why Allergies Occur

Your body’s immune system protects you against illness by staying alert for harmful agents entering the body. If this occurs, the immune system protects you by neutralizing, removing, or destroying the harmful agent.

Allergies occur when the immune system misidentifies a normally harmless substance, such as pollen or mold, as a harmful agent. The body responds by producing more of certain chemicals to neutralize the substance. These chemicals, called histamines, are what caused the itchy, redness, swelling, and irritation you experience.

Many substances can trigger an allergic reaction. Most allergens that cause eye symptoms are airborne. Plant pollen, mold, dust, and animal dander (skin particles) are the allergens that most often affect the eyes.

Allergies can lead to a condition called allergic conjunctivitis. This is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the membrane that covers the inside of the eyelid and the white part of the eye). It may occur at about the same time each year, when the allergen is most abundant

Relief for Irritated Eyes

Short of completely avoiding the allergens that cause your symptoms, it’s impossible to escape your allergies. However, you can take steps to relieve your symptoms:

1. Try over-the-counter products such as antihistamine eyedrops to reduce redness, itchiness, and other symptoms. Artificial tears can also help by flushing allergens out of the eyes these products are available at drugstores.

2. When possible, limit your exposure to allergens. Stay inside when pollen or mold counts are especially high.

3. For cleaner indoor air, use air-conditioner filters that are designed to reduce allergens in the air.

4. Ask your health-care provider about other options. For example allergy shots may reduce symptoms and the need for other medication. Prescription medications may also be available.

Do your eyes get itchy, red, and irritated? Itchy, red eyes can be the result of many different causes. Perhaps you were in a smoke infested environment that caused your eyes to itch. Maybe you have been sitting a computer all day and strained your eyes by not blinking your eyes as often as you normallydo. The most common reason however is because you have allergy eyes.

Allergy eyes is most often a negative reaction to a substance in your immediate environment. For example, allergy eyes can be caused by pollen, weeds, and grass exposure. This is most prevalent in the fall and spring. If you step outside you can be overwhelmed with allergens and the effects of pollen.

Allergy eyes can also be caused by exposure to our beloved pets. Dog and cat dander, along with dog and cat hair, is released into the environment. You breathe in the dander and it can irritate the eyes and cause allergy eyes. Don’t worry if you have a dog or cat and you suffer from allergy eyes. There are ways to treat your eyes and keep your previous dog or cat at home with you.

What are the symptoms of allergy eyes? When you experience allergy eyes you can suffer from one or more of the following symptoms: itching, burning, tearing, and swelling of the eye. You may also feel the temptation to scratch your eye, which can make it worse. In addition, your eyes may become sensitive to light.

What be done to treat allergy eyes? Allergy eyes can be soothed by cold compresses. You can also try allergy eye drops such as Visine Allergy eye drops. Visine has created an entire line of eye drops that are specific to different eye irritations. Visine for allergies and Visine for dry eyes are effective eye drops to try. Antihistamine pills can be taken for relief of allergy eyes.

You can also take steps to improve the environment you reside in. Make sure to keep your house clean and free from as much dust and dander as possible. Use hypoallergenic mattress, pillow, and cushion covers to fight against dust and dust mites. All of these factors are potential reasons for allergy eyes.

Your itchy, red, irritated allergy eyes should clear up after the combination of eye drops, allergy medicine, and a clean environment. Use all these tools in combination to achieve the most beneficial effects.

Photography with the aid of a digital camera is beyond doubt very fascinating. However, it also has many a nooks that the users of the digital camera must be aware of and also must be well educated to deal with in order to produce good photographs worth the most prized digital camera. Such a concept is that of the red eye! In order to understand what this red eye actually is, a little detailed introspection is necessary. Basically speaking red-eye is a function of at least three things, they are firstly, ambient level of light because stumpy light level causes the retina of the person to be photographed to open wider to admit more light thereby divulging open the iris, which is the primary part that reflects the red light hence giving the appearance of red eyes for the subjects. Also secondly the younger the person being photographed the wider remains the retina and hence the greater the effect of red eye in the picture. Thirdly, the reflection angle of the flash plays a vital role, as the light is recoiled back to the digital camera and the closer the incident light beam is to this reflected light beam, the greater becomes the red eye effect. To prevent this instruments such as flash brackets are useful to make the flash a bit removed from the propinquity of the lens. Thus the red eye effect is somewhat revealed till this part of this discussion. Now is the time to look into a greater detail in order to analyze the various aspects of the red eye effect and also find out ways of reducing the problem as far as possible.

It can be noted here that the only important thing is that the users must ensure that the proper fixing of the angle between the flash beam and the lens axis. The general rule here is that the photographer must keep the angle wide enough that the light beam from the flash does not reflect off the retina of the person being photographed and comes right back into the digital camera lens. A good idea is to make the red-eye reduction work by making the flash shine a light into the eyes of the person being photographed just before the flash is incident and the shutter is pressed. This causes the irises in the eyes of the person being photographed to narrow down or shrink. As a result of this the eye develops a smaller opening for the eye view of the digital camera and does not show off the blood filled retina. This light is called pre light! And very importantly this process works only if the person to be photographed is in point of fact looking directly at the flash for the pre-light to come.

Other factors influencing the red eye are the level of ambient light during the time when the photograph is being taken and how near the flash light is to the lens. The rule of thumb comes out that the brighter the ambient light; the lesser is the effect of red eyes, everything else being one and the same. As the flashlight goes farther from the lens, the fewer becomes the effect of red eyes, everything else being one and the same again. Thus the key idea is that red eye is not caused if the ambient light is comparatively high. And it does have a significant effect if the shooting area is dark. Many digital cameras have built in features for anti red eye that is used to reduce red eye when taking a picture of a person looking straight at the camera also. But manually, the best red eye reduction can be obtained with the help of an external flash as described.

The above discussion has dealt with the most important ideas regarding the red eye effect. The discussion has analyzed the inherent facts about the digital camera red eye effect, their causes as well as remedies. The only thing that remains is that the users must implement these ideas while shooting under circumstances discussed here so that the red eye effect cannot harm the beauties of art created with the aid of the fantastic device, the digital camera!

Absolutely white, whites of the eye, is a myth. Veins in the eyes are and must be visible in healthy eyes. It is only when the red veins are dilated, the eye appears red. The drying up of lubricants and other protective fluids in the eye can cause irritation in the eye and result in unaccustomed redness and dilation of the veins in the eye. This makes the veins stand out on the whites of the eye giving the eye a reddish color.

Dry eye is also known as Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), or keratitis sicca, sicca syndrome, xerophthalmia, dry eye syndrome (DES), or simply dry eyes. This is an eye disease caused by decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation from the eye commonly found in humans and some animals. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a Latin term that means “dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva”.

A good night’s sleep and repeated lubrication of the eye may not solve the problem, if the dry eye condition is a symptom of some deep rooted systemic problem.

What causes dry eyes? Environmental factors, aging, diseases such as the Sjogren’s syndrome or lifestyles could cause dry eyes. For instance people who constantly stare at the computer monitor without blinking can develop dry eyes over a period of time. Dry eyes could also be caused by obstructions in the tear ducts which reduces the amount of fluids that flow in to the eye.

What are the symptoms of dry eyes? A dry eye is a condition that normally does not produce any eye irritation and hence patients with dry eyes do not actually realize that they have a problem of dry eyes. Chronic dry eyes could result in pain in the eye, light sensitivity, constant gritty sensations, itching, redness and blurring of vision.

Sometimes, people with dry eyes may have excessive tears overflowing the eyes and running down the cheeks causing some confusion about the condition. However, this should be correctly interpreted as a distress signal that the eye is being deprived of lubrication and other protective fluids and is signaling the nervous system for compensation. The response is a flood of tears in the eyes. However, these tears tend to arrive too late and the eye needs to be treated and regenerated.

Diagnosis of dry eyes is done using routine clinical exams and other specific tests such as Schirmer test to determine how much moisture is present in the eye and the severity of the problem. Dyes such as fluorescein or rose Bengal are used to stain the eye surface and determine how much of the surface is dry. Another test that is often used is teat break up time test (TBUT) which helps doctors determine the time taken by the eye to respond with tears to foreign particles in the eye.

In several cases mild dry eye conditions can be set right by the use of preservative free lubricating drops in the eye. Chronic dry eyes are treated with artificial tear drops and ointments, temporary or permanent puntal occlusion, Restais, other medications using tropical steroids and surgery.

The eye is a vital organ that converts the reflected light from an object into neuron signals and feed them to the brain for processing and identification of the object.

The eyes can suffer from various conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, conjunctivitis, cataract, astigmatism, glaucoma, sty, infection and tumors. The eyelids blink several times a minute to clean the eyes and keep them moist, using the secretion of tears from the lacrimal gland. The lids also have a fast reflex action to protect the eyes.

Tears serve an important function in the health of the eyes. They wash off dust, chemicals, germs and other foreign bodies. They control the microorganisms in the eyes with their enzymes. In a condition called ‘dry eyes,’ the tear gland does not secrete enough tears, or the quality of the liquid is poor and evaporates very fast. Normally the tears form three layers over the eye. The lacrimal glands produce water, and the small glands produce oil and mucus. The bottom mucus layer covers the cornea, and over it is the water layer with some nutrients. The outer oil layer prevents the water from evaporating.

Dry eyes are one of the old age problems, where not enough oil is produced. Some medications cause this problem. Hot, dry and windy weather can also lead to this problem. Menopause, thyroid conditions and vitamin A deficiency can also cause it. The person with dry eyes has itching, burning, irritation, blurred vision, discomfort and redness of the eyes. Surprisingly, there may be more tears secreted.

Treatment for dry eyes is planned only after finding the root cause of the problem. For old people with no specific problem, artificial tears two to three times a day and an ointment during the night can take care of the problem. The passage from the eyes to the nose, which normally drains the tears, can be plugged to keep enough tears in the eyes.

Dry eyes, if left untreated, can cause more severe problems for the eye. Drinking plenty of water, taking the eyes off of paperwork or the computer periodically, and blinking the eyelids deliberately are some of the ways we can assist our eyes.

Red Eyes is the most common symptom of the eye which attracts attention of everybody. Usually the redness of eyes is most often mistaken for conjunctivitis. Infact conjunctivitis is one of the many causes for red eyes, the others being glaucoma, iridocyclitis, corneal ulcer, scleritis, episcleritis etc. to name a few.

Most of the time conjunctivitis being viral in origin, there will be recovery even without treatment, whereas diseases like glaucoma, corneal ulcer etc., need urgent treatment. Otherwise they will cause permanent irreversible damage to the structure as well as the functions of the eye.

Some people use eye drops indiscriminately. First of all self medication is dangerous. That too to use the medication prescribed for some other disease is still dangerous. For example to treat an acute glaucoma, one has to use a drug called pilocarpine. If it is given in a case of iridocyclitis it will be disastrous. Similarly, atropine which should be given in a case of iridocyclitis and corneal ulcer, if given in a case of glaucoma, it could cause permanent damage. So cross medication and self medication has got a deleterious effect especially in the treatment of the red eyes.

The common bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with suitable antibiotics and frequent washing of eyes whereas corneal ulcer is treated with antibiotics, atropine and a pad to patch the
eye (to give rest to the eye ). The acute glaucoma in which there is sudden loss of vision with pain, redness, headache and vomiting is treated is treated with pilocarpine drops, systemic acetazolamide or injection mannitol. The iridocyclitis in which there is gradual loss of vision with pain and redness is treated with atropine, antibiotics with local steroids as
well as systemic steroids.

Most of the time the duration between the onset of the disease and initiation of the correct treatment has got an important role on the final result after the treatment in case of red eyes. So if this time is delayed, whatever be the reason, one is bound to lose some amount of vision which he would have saved had he gone to the doctor at the earliest.
